LIGO press conference 10:30am (EST) Thursday 2/11/2016

Today, at work, most of the day has been devoted towards being excited about the the long-rumored, long awaited announcement of a LIGO detection. While I'm sure we will all have much more to say about this in the weeks to come, the press conference, (and coinciding paper release?) will take place this Thursday, Feb 11, 2016 at 10:30 am (EST) at the National Press Club in Washington, DC, along with a simultaneous press conference in Italy, with the VIRGO collaboration.

You can find the link to the live-stream here. (It will be updated an hour before the event starts.) Many of us on the blog have been working on gravitational-wave related science for a long time, and this is the will likely announce the start of a new era of gravitational wave astronomy.

Very exciting times!!!

EDIT - As Leo points out in the comments below, if anybody has any questions about this, we will be here to answer them!

If you want to learn something about gravitational waves before the announcement, some of our members have done some podcast primers with the Titanium Physicists podcast:

Ep 6. How gravitational wave interferometers (LIGO) work  (with Dave and Jocelyn)

Ep 29.  The Laws of black hole merger.  (with Dave and Jocelyn)

Ep 47. The “sound” made by two black holes about to merge together (with Dave and Jocelyn)

Ep 62. The “sound” made by a black hole after it collides (with Leo and Chiara)

  1. And of course, we'll be here to answer any gravitational wave / general relativity / black holes questions you might have!
